Read Your Way Into Behavior Analysis

From Don't Shoot the Dog to the BCBA

ABA is the rare field where the classic books and the credential exam cover the same ground. The reinforcement principles Karen Pryor teaches through dog training are the same ones a BCBA applies in an autism clinic, which makes reading your way in unusually efficient: the shelf is genuinely job preparation.

Start working in weeks, not years

The RBT credential takes a 40-hour training and an exam, and it puts you in sessions applying everything in the books under supervision. It is the field's try-before-you-buy: most people know within six months whether the master's is worth it.

The BCBA, the field's center of gravity

Board certification requires a master's with specific coursework, supervised fieldwork hours, and an exam with a famously unforgiving pass rate. The payoff is autonomy: BCBAs design the programs everyone else runs.

The ceiling and the adjacent doors

Past the BCBA, the field ladders into clinical supervision and directorships, and it borders special education closely enough that plenty of people cross between the two. The child development science on our shelves is the shared foundation.
